Bundesliga Matchday 12 Friday Opener Mainz 05 wins Friday Opener Against Stuttgrart 3-1

It was a relatively even first half, with a slight advantage for the hosts over Stuttgart.  The Schwaben took the lead just five minutes into the second half with a goal by Caucau (50th minute).  Mainz answered with three goals starting with Ujah (53rd minute), Ivanshitz (60th minute) and Ujah for his second of the evening (64th minute), for a final score of 3-1 for the hosts.  Is this a turn around for the Mainz team, which has had a dismal record so far this season?

With a relatively even first half the scoreless tie reflected the play on the field.  Five minutes into the second half Martin Harnik put a pass into the five metre area, with Caucau rushing onto the ball and putting it into the net.  Just three minutes later Mainz got the equalizer, Elkin Soto passed a ball high from the left corner into the five of Stuttgart, where Ujah just had to put his head on the ball to transport it into the net.  Seven minutes later Ivanshitz got  the go ahead goal when he fired the ball into the right lower corner of the Stuttgart net.

With 30 minutes left in the match, Ujah scored again to put the game out of reach for Stuttgart.  Ujah picked up the ball and with a slick maneouvre moved around Sven Ulreich and pushed the ball into the empty net.

The win moves Mainz out of the relegation zone into 17th spot for now, while Stuttgart remains in 6th place with the frontrunner all a game  in hand.

Matchday 12 continues tomorrow with six games and two more on Sunday.  Tomorrow Dortmund plays Wolfsburg and Dortmund will attempt to consolidate its spot in the top three of the league.  Front runners Bayern and Schalke 04 play on Sunday, with Munich as guests in Augsburg and Schalke being hosted by Hanover 96.  Bayern will attempt to widen its lead without Bastian Schweinsteiger, while Schalke will want to remain in second place.
